In 21st century the most interesting thing about a person is his/her @TaxResidency. For UK residents "non-dom status means #territorialtax! For UK doms there is #worldwidetax and #RBT. For US citizens there is #worldwidetax, @CitizenshipTax and #FATCA. theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
.@TaxResidency is often confusing and often has a huge impact on ones life. In simple terms, you are a #taxresident of a country which has the right to impose the full force of its tax rules on you. This is different from HOW and on WHAT sources of income tax residents are taxed.
What income is subject to taxation: Terms like "worldwide taxation" (wherever the income is earned) and "territorial taxation" (income earned only in the country) describe HOW and ON WHAT income #taxresidents are taxed. These terms do NOT describe @TaxResidency (who is taxed).

#Tokens & #Belongingness
For the past month, I have been diving into #DAOs and crypto tokens and I wanted to share some thoughts and elicit responses from other #crypto-enthusiasts.
If you haven't heard of #DAO before, think of it as an online community run on top of Web3/Blockchain infrastructure. Typically a DAO has intentional governance protocols and a crypto token to facilitate inter- and intra- community economy.
My biggest takeaway was to think of a crypto token as a fluid representation for "#belongingness" to a #community.

Arguments linking per-country caps to maintaining diversity in America are used repeatedly. They came up yet again during the house judiciary committee hearing on 04/28, so we wanted to take some time to address it. 1/12
The thing being considered right now, is the removal of per-country caps in EB immigration. The caps apply to immigrants in this category who are ALREADY in the US and have been awaiting their turn for a green card for years! 2/12
Eliminating these per-country caps wouldn't let in any more EB immigrants into the US annually than right now. It would just make it make everyone stand in the SAME LINE for them, irrespective of their country of birth. 3/12

In 5 minutes of testimony, @David_J_Bier has managed to not just illustrate the serious gaps in legal immigration policy, but also address why things stand the way they do.

Excerpt about employer-based Green Card path from his testimony on “Why Don’t They Just Get in Line?” 🧵👇
Employers may sponsor their employees, but their employees have a hard annual numerical limit of 130,000 green cards—half of which go to the spouses and minor children of the workers. This limit was last updated in 1990.
Immigrants from a single birthplace can obtain no more than 7 percent of the green cards in a single year unless they would otherwise not be used.

2. Understand Canada’s Immigration Pilots:

The Atlantic
Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) and the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) were designed for one purpose: attract foreign workers to Canada’s smaller, and less popular regions.

Foreign workers who manage to secure jobs from participating employers of the Pilots can

When applying outside Canada, it’s imperative to know that you will find a job quicker with a Canadian-style resume.

-Adapt your resume for each role.
Generic resumes do not work you’re applying to a company that isn’t stating a current opening.

- Also, remember to use your cover letter.

#S386 my understanding 1. @SenatorDurbin want no harm clause, but do not want transition period extended to 9 from 3 years, which is the practical way of ensuring #noharmclause, it will ensure #row with #ApprovedGreencardPetition will get #greencard without impact for 9 years
2. 50/50 rule for companies employing #h1b :- @SenatorDurbin wants it effective immediately, @SenMikeLee wants to provide 3 years to make this transition, immediately applying 50/50 rule will cause to job loss & deportation of #indiaborn #skilledimmigrants
Cause they r one who r forced to stay on #H1B for decades despite of having #ApprovedGreencardPetition for decade. 3 years will help most of them to get out of #h1b & rest will get AOS in meantime.

With reports that the Trump administration is barring certain foreign workers in the H1B, H2B, J1 & L1 categories from US entry, we estimate this would keep 219,000 temporary workers out
Included in these totals are the spouses and minor children who enter the U.S. as derivatives of the worker's visa
Beyond barring temporary workers applying from abroad in certain categories, the White House is extending the legal immigration ban it first unveiled in April, citing the COVID19-related job loss

@1a @toddzwillich @AveryJCK @Puneetkaurc @EleanorPelta @ahauslohner @RepZoeLofgren @toddzwillich asks about the political economy of the #immigration system: Doesn't Big Tech get whatever it wants?

Answer from panelists: Nope!

Companies are always jonesing for more #H1B visas, but haven't gotten their way since 2000, I believe?

@1a @toddzwillich @AveryJCK @Puneetkaurc @EleanorPelta @ahauslohner @RepZoeLofgren Quick political guide:

* Temporary work visas (#H1B etc): Loved by employers; loathed by workers lashed to said employers

* Permanent residency (#GreenCard): Liked by (most) employers; loved by workers empowered to switch jobs & bargain for wages; better for US-born workers

For those on F-1 visas wanting to convert to a green card, this is a very good mechanism but you have to make sure your application is properly done. This was the similar pathway that TDawg and I used to become US permanent residents.

Winter is coming...preceded by the Fall 2018 Unified Regulatory Agenda from @DHSgov. Once again, semi-annually, it's time to see what new #immigration actions we might find buried in this list of rulemaking plans that's hiding in plain sight? 1/ reginfo.gov/public/do/eAge…
Let's start with @DHSgov proposals that didn't appear in the prior regulatory agenda this past spring. (These are all draft rules that haven't been published yet, and won't take effect for months or years, after a full public notice-and-comment process.) 2/
Two new actions affecting #asylum-seekers, tightening "credible fear" determinations and eligibility for work permits, both in the name of deterrence... 3/

What is this long-anticipated #PublicCharge rule affecting #immigrants that @DHSgov announced over the weekend? I've updated this detailed explainer from @chooseboundless, and here comes a TL;DR... 1/

Bottom line: Although the Republican-controlled Congress isn't interested in slashing legal #immigration, the Trump Administration is pursuing a workaround through a unilateral @DHSgov regulation. 2/
The #PublicCharge rule is designed to significantly reduce the number of people who are eligible for green cards and other visas, by redefining what makes them dependent on government benefits -- *or likely to be in the future.* 3/
