Power analysis for #interactions can be tough!

📢 Our new preprint features:
𝟭 An intuitive taxonomy of 12 types of interaction
...with the 𝘕s to reach power = .80/.90
𝟮 A 😭 meta-study
𝟯 Simulations testing 3 ways to ↗️ power
𝟰 A cool web app!

🧵

𝟭𝗮 As we know from popular blogs/papers, power analyses differ b/w main effects & interactions because:

👉a main effect corresponds to a difference b/w means

👉a two-way interaction corresponds to a difference b/w mean subdifferences

(using simple b/w-Ss designs as examples) Image
𝟭𝗯 Thus, when running a power analysis…

✅ It is OK to use a generic value to define the expected effect size of a main effect (e.g., a medium-sized difference of 𝘥 = 0.35)

❌ But it is NOT OK to use a generic value to define the expected effect size of an interaction Image

1) How I cured my #LongCovid in 3mos after suffering for almost a year. This was my last hope. I researched what #Covid does to the body, came up with a list of "clinically studied" supplements and...

The language of quant crit is in its infancy but the practice has a long legacy dating back to Du Bois and Wells-Barnett.

Let's use #QuantCritSyllabus to feature studies that use critical quantitative methodologies and frameworks. I'll start.

The Truth About #OpenOffices
”When the firms switched to open offices, face-to-face interactions fell by 70%.”

#HRM #WorkplaceDesign hbr.org/2019/11/the-tr…
But ”hybrid #openoffice designs are not a panacea. If you are going to let people choose the spaces that best meet their individual needs, your workers might as well be remote.”
#remotework
And #remotework hinders #communication: ”we found that remote workers communicated nearly 80% less about their assignments than colocated team members did; in 17% of projects they didn’t communicate at all.”

In a recent paper, with Alexander Chudik @DallasFed, M Hashem Pesaran @USCDornsife, @mraissi80 @IMFNews & @arebucci1 @JHUCarey, we develop a threshold-augmented dynamic multi-country model (#TGVAR) to quantify the #macroeconomic effects of #Covid19: econ.cam.ac.uk/research/cwpe-… 1/n Image
Key challenges with the empirical #economic analysis of #Covid19 include the following: how to identify the shock, how to account for its non-linear effects, & how to quantify its effects while accounting for spillovers, common global factors, network effects and uncertainty. 2/n
We contribute to the literature by addressing these issues in a coherent multi-country framework. We offer an identification strategy for the #Covid19 shock considering that a synthetic control method cannot be applied in the context of a global #pandemic. 3/n

Now Dr. Koko Warner on the meanings of #lossanddamage

What if 70% of your income derives from #coralreefs

Perhaps #noneconomic loss and damage may be even more profound. Image
Dr Warner also provides interesting accounts of #indirect loss and damage from climate change. When the Rhine was no longer navigable last year due to drought, there were a range of knock-on effects. Elsewhere the drought has made entire forests more vulnerable to #disease.
Some remarks on meaningful research gaps: We need to understand Loss and damage through a #frame that is locally specific, reflecting local complexities and values.

We need to know more about #interactions and #knockon effects.

Most of the apps and websites are card based these days. They shows a listing. This listing have cards vertically arranges one after another. The content on those card is fixed. Only the most important content is visible. What if we can customise the content?
Suppose I am searching a new House and specifically looking for Dimension. Or I am searching for Mobile and specifically looking for Camera resolution. Suppose I am looking for Restaurants and specifically looking for Distance. I don't want to dig down tapping! Is it possible to
pin the content that appear henceforth on the cards right on the listing page as we open the app. #UX #interactiondesign #Interactions #InformationArchitecture #IA #design #UI #UIDesign #HCD #retail #Digital #ecommerce #apps #productdesign #HCI
