Reacting to a society which in terms of moral values was becoming more liberal ( not the party, the state of mind). They couldn’t tell their casual racist jokes without someone telling them it was wrong. They needed to blame someone for losing their grip on their own lives.
Charlatans and far right politicians told them their power was ebbing away because of political correctness gone mad, foreigners and Muslims. So they seized on brexit to show those pesky foreigners and liberals what for.
