"Make Canada Work for People Who've Done the Work" @PierrePoilievre who voted against #CERB shares a press release amending the budget that reflects zero compassion for low income earners and the #disabled
A re-elected Liberal government will:
Continue to ensure that secondary earners—mostly women—can exclude up to $14,000 of their working income when income-testing the #CanadaWorkersBenefit, so that families can receive up to $2,400.

This is a facile narrative that Poilievre keeps insisting, preferring an austerity budget that will only make the vulnerable even more precarious without government supports ... none of this will affect housing prices, because that is driven by a lack of supply
1/2 Conservatives advocate #taxcuts that fuel #inflation, reduced govt spending, free markets, #deregulation, #privatization, free trade, and minimal government debt. Those #regressiveeconomicpolicies instituted by the Harper govt led to #deficits

Freeports and nature some thoughts.
Freeports aren't ports they are large areas of land including in some cases SSI's and National Parks. Some board members of Freeports and directors are local councillors.
#Freeports #Nature #Deregulation #RSPB #Wildlife
Significant areas of natural beauty including Dartmoor, the New Forest, the whole of the Isle of Wight and the North York Moors. They also engulf entire cities such as Derby and Nottingham, Hull, Scunthorpe, and large areas of Liverpool.
The new freeports between them cover around 15,000 to 20,000kms2 – approximately 8% of England’s total surface area.

National park authorities were not consulted before being included in the outer boundary of the new freeports. Changes in planning regulations will affect them.

#NeverForget that the cap on bankers' bonuses was introduced as part of efforts to improve regulation of the under-regulated banking sector in the wake of the 2008 crash, which led to a decade of brutal austerity, & a dangerous increase in polarisation.

theconversation.com/bankers-bonus-…
In many countries, including ours, unemployment spiked, household wealth evaporated & there were long-term negative effects on global economic growth, income inequality & political stability - & now our Govt is bringing back the same failed neoliberal policies which created this.
There is now good quality research into banking bonuses which suggests caution, with evidence of a direct relationship between “variable executive remuneration” (performance dependent bonuses) & risk taking, & other negative 'unintended consequences'.

"States at war generally adopt interventionist economic policies to mobilize resources and manpower. #Ukraine hasn’t followed suit, instead pursuing dogmatic free-marketeer measures that suit #Western creditors more than its own population."

"Generally, #states at #war tend to nationalize key sectors of the economy to maximize armaments production and stabilize the civilian economy, both to prevent chaos in the rear and feed the army. Strangely, this has not taken place in #Ukraine"
"The idea that “#corruption” is the greatest barrier to development is a fiction used to justify trade #liberalization in which the stronger #Western capitalists inevitably win, to the detriment of the Ukrainian economy."

The truth about #Grenfell is slowly being revealed.

Imho, it's now crystal clear that all the key decisions flowed from free-market fundamentalists' desire to always push for more #deregulation, regardless of the consequences, in order to maximise profit. Image
#Regulation - or "red tape" - exists to keep society safe & civilised, for example by conserving biodiversity, preventing quack remedies, & ensuring air, food, water, products & working & living conditions are safe, thus protecting consumers, workers, the environment & children. Image
The Tories, the libertarian Right & free-market think tanks talk a lot about removing 'red tape', & deregulation 'removing barriers to trade'.

What this means in reality is letting corporations & unethical individuals get away with exploitation, pollution, & sometimes, murder. ImageImageImageImage

1. Let's take a look at what the government means by #deregulation.
Does it mean making life easier for people who are struggling to get by?
Not a bit of it.
Thread/
2. People who need state benefits, refugees seeking asylum, even people seeking probate on a dead parent's will, find themselves meshed in an impenetrable thicket of red tape.
Has it got better? No, it's got worse.
3. But let's say, to take an entirely random example, you're a ferry company that wants to sack its crews illegally and replace them with underpaid agency workers.

Or a water company that wants to pump raw sewage into a river....

#Wonk warning: a #thread on social cost of #carbon (SCC). We at @CVEPLLC expected @JoeBiden not just to reinstate higher SCC in his #dayone #climate order but also to look at incorporating #environmental #justice into it.

He did, and it matters. #OOTT /1
Background: when #federal #agencies write rules, they try to maximize net benefits or minimize net costs.

The goal is that adding up all benefits for (and costs to) society + all costs to (and benefits for) regulated parties should be > 0. /2
In this context, SCC offers a way for agencies to “monetize” societal benefits of #climate rules. Oversimplification version: Benefit = (tons of GHG avoided) * (SCC, in $/ton). There are couple of quirks, tho. /3

Why were tech platforms reluctant to moderate Trump’s posts, even as he repeatedly violated hate speech regulations?

The same reason why #Grenfell happened, why most jobs are insecure & low paid, why $26 trillion is held offshore, & why democracy is on the ropes: #deregulation. Image
Libertarian billionaires push to deregulate *everything* to help consolidate their power & wealth: they fund deregulatory political parties & try to saturate online, print & broadcast media with voices sympathetic to reducing Governments' ability to regulate their activities. Image
In particular, Libertarian-billionaire-funded, deregulation-supporting populist nationalist politicians' leverage of social media to spread bigoted conspiracy theories & #propaganda has gone largely unchecked amid a vacuum of laws regulating government speech on social media. ImageImageImageImage

Happy to see this paper with @thoatley published in Socio-Economic Review. Building on the literature on the exorbitant privilege, we explore the drivers of American #financialization. The US financial sector almost doubled in size between 1980 and 2005. 1/n
Few other industrial democracies witnessed a similar increase in the value added by finance. Financial intermediation did not rise everywhere. Rather, it shrank in some countries, grew moderately in others, and expanded significantly in CA, AUL, IRL, the UK, & the US. 2/n
Interestingly, this growth does not appear to be due to internal financial #deregulation. Relative to other countries, the US deregulated little bn 1980 and 2017. Yet, it experienced one of the largest increases in the size of its financial sector. What explains this puzzle? 3/n
