NEW REPORT: A study by the Center and our partners examines the impact of COVID-19 in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi & Uganda, revealing that low-income communities struggled with accessing reproductive health care during the pandemic.

Read more: bit.ly/3BhOxoO
The study showed that:
➡️26% of women and girls across the countries in the study could not access modern contraceptives.
➡️People could not access #SRHR services because of long distances, excessive costs, closure of health facilities and other factors
“The rights of entire populations to access sexual reproductive health services, including during the pandemic, remain a key responsibility of every government.”—Evelyne Opondo, Senior Regional Director for Africa, Center for Reproductive Rights

How anti-choice organizations are slowly making their way into respectability: a 🧵. I’ve been witnessing the slow legitimization of #antichoice orgs in global spaces and conversations and this is concerning. 10 years ago, no one save the similarly conservative would have been
Caught dead talking and strategizing with them. It’s 2022, #SRHR are under severe backlash and constant threat, yet the artisans of said backlash have access to mainstream strategic conversations and briefings. They now benefit from several platforms from which they can reinforce
Their anti #SRHR messages, in seemingly all impunity. To me this highlight two things: how conservative populist gvts have relied on these orgs to access power and rewarding them for their support by giving them time and space and how these orgs have instrumentalized human rights

Important points here for #SRHR & ageing. Shirin Heidari calls for an intersectional approach which considers social, cultural, and psychological factors. This is about human rights & of course sexual rights #SexRightsAge A mini-thread ⬇
tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10… @SRHMJournal
Shirin argues that because of an increasing older population across the globe, "Meeting the unmet SRHR needs of the older population requires integrated care and a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to health services"
Not only that but "Concerted efforts are required to put in the spotlight the SRHR needs of older people, with particular attention to how these needs are affected by factors such as gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, race, and other intersectional factors"

A 13-year-old girl, Fartun Hassan Ahmed, died after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) on 11th July 2021 in a small village of Jeerinle, roughly 160km from Galkayo, the capital of the north-central Mudug region Galmudug regional state in Somalia...

A thread...
“We didn’t know what to do when we saw the bleeding. We booked a car to take the girl to hospital but unfortunately, she died when the car arrived”, her 45-year-old mother Nadifo Ahmed said. The girl bled to death around 4.00 PM, having been cut at 6.00 AM. Cc. @melindagates
FGM in Somalia has been carried out for hundreds of years because most people believe it is a religious obligation, though Christian and Muslim religious scholars have repeatedly condemned it. The message that #FGMNotMyReligion has not reached many across Africa and Asia.

#IMPORTANT #UPDATE: #ECP’s in #TAMILNADU
The Director of the Drugs Control Dept. will direct pharmacies to make emergency contraceptive pills available for OVER THE COUNTER purchase. The Dept. will clarify to all pharmacies that ECP’s are LEGAL/NOT BANNED, must be stocked & sold
Those of us who stock ECP’s and give out to people need/can't find them WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. So yes, ask if you need the pill, but before you do, PLEASE CHECK PHARMACIES IN YOUR AREA. If it’s not available at a pharmacy let us know so we can inform the area drug inspector.
BACKGROUND:

On Wednesday, Nov 11th at 9 PM, I sent out an email representation drafted by an amazing bunch of lawyers regarding ECP’s being unavailable and inaccessible for purchase in TN to 5 state departments: Drugs Control, Health, Home, Social Welfare, Women’s Commission.

@phumzileunwomen sets out our five goals for #WomenPeacePower:
1. #Participation: A radical shift in women’s meaningful participation in peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, ensuring that women are fully involved in each and every peace and political process that the United Nations supports.
2. #HumanRights: The UN’s unconditional support for women’s human rights and women human rights defenders. The UN must be the loudest voice in their defense! Sexual and reproductive rights are core women's human rights. #WHRD #SRHR

Keep this on your radar, folks. Especially watch the language used to describe what's happening. @businessInsider #ForcedSterilizations businessinsider.com/ice-doctor-per…
Usually, "unwanted" is a dated term to describe an untimed, or unexpected, pregnancy. #SRHR #SexualHealth
Usually, it covers a lot of agency on the part of the person who became pregnant. In other words, someone who is able to become pregnant had a consensual sexual encounter, and that encounter resulted in an unexpected — or "unwanted" — pregnancy.

Hello🙋😁
I've been a volunteer for @onelifeng for a couple of months. A radio drama series was organised to address Sexual and Reproductive Health Issues, Sex, Sexuality, Rape, Domestic Violence, Abortion etc.
What do you know about sexual rights???

A THREAD👇👇👇
Sexuality is an integral part of an individual's life and identity. Despite this, sexuality and sexual health are often considered taboo subjects.
World Sexual Health Day attempts to change this by engaging youth, adults, educators, sexual health practitioners, nonprofit organizations, and government policy-makers in an open and earnest conversation about sex, sexuality, and sexual health. #WorldSexualHealthDay2020

NEW: Ahead of the 10th anniversary of Kenya's Constitution, our report details how the government's failure to uphold its obligations has harmed the reproductive health of its people—and how to better protect these rights. #KatibaforSRHR #KatibaAt10 reproductiverights.org/press-room/rep…
Although the Constitution (or "Katiba") has provisions for safeguarding #reprorights—including abortion—they are ignored, sidelined, or rendered ineffective. The result: Women and girls, especially from low-income communities, opt for unsafe abortion. #KatibaforSRHR #KatibaAt10
Recommendations to protect safe abortion access include:

- Training police and prosecutors
- Eliminating legal loopholes that fuel harassment against women and #SRH providers
- Reinstating Standards & Guidelines to reduce unsafe abortion practices

We’re excited to share that we and our partners at @CAREUganda have launched a pilot program to protect the sexual and reproductive rights (#SRHR) of women and girls living in one of Uganda’s largest refugee settlements, Adjumani.
Women in Adjumani face numerous barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services. In addition, an overall lack of accountability within the refugee settlement puts them at heightened risk for #SRHR violations.
We’re establishing an accountability system with community-led mechanisms to monitor, review and respond to #SRHR-related complaints to better protect and defend the reproductive rights of those in Adjumani.

BREAKING: Today the US State Department released its review of the harmful #GlobalGagRule. The results? In short, the report identified tangible harms caused by the policy that extend well beyond family planning programs to a range of other health programs. #SRHR
Rather than serving public health, the #GlobalGagRule curtails access to essential clinical services & strips health care providers of their ability to serve the needs of their patients. More on the harms of this discriminatory policy ↓ gu.tt/2Scpg8m
35 million abortions take place every year in unsafe conditions, leading to about 23,000 preventable pregnancy-related deaths. The US has a critical role to play in making abortion care safe & accessible for all, but the #GlobalGagRule runs counter to that responsibility.

10 years ago today I was just me.

It's amazing what can change in that time... 🍾🥂

... and how much can stay the same. 😢

🧵 A [long] thread.
Home is indistinguishable...

... ten years with my wonderful wife, part of a real team

... three little people (one of whom made us pancakes!!) ...

... my ten-year-younger self couldn't contemplate the mixture of warmth and terror that comes with being a parent (& husband).
Work too is pretty indistinguishable...

I think/hope @dbsdigital has made a real difference, helping to get 🇩🇰 🇳🇱 🇸🇪 (& a little 🇬🇧) money directly to folk in the global south who can bring about real #SRHR change.

It's taught me how vital *transparency & accountability* is.

Eagerly and enthusiastically awaiting the conversation with President @BarackObama. ♥️
For those who don't eat, sleep, and breathe #SexualHealth and #SexEd, this is what we're aiming for. We don't want "they didn't say no". We're want "they gave eager and enthusiastic consent." That's where the bar should be.
YES!!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Starting with spoken word!!! Artists will save us. #ArtIsPolitical

This is a continuation of the conversations we have been having on how the #globalpandemic #covid19 is affecting the lives of girls and young women.
These conversations aim to ensure that we engage a #genderlens response mechanism during global pandemics ensuring the most vulnerable amongst us are not left out in the cold.

Health care is a human right that everyone should have access to, no matter where they live.

@EnidMuthoni1, our Senior VP of the Global Legal Program moderates a discussion on how advancements in law & policy are critical to making this a reality around the globe. #ICPD25 Image

It's Sunday ('sexual rights day') and I'm thinking about the sexual and reproductive health of older women as this is an area that gets very little attention. A call to remember that #SRHR should be approached from a lifecourse perspective #seniors #sex #OlderAdults #SexRightsAge
For women post-menopause, there can be consequences from their earlier reproductive health that affect their current health status, in particular gynaecologic and obstetric issues #SRHR #SexRightsAge
And as inequalities tend to become more profound as we get older (e.g. where ageism prevents awareness, understanding, and progress) older women do not get the #SRHR care they require #SexRightsAge
