How long would the #COVID19 #pandemic have lasted without the #vaccine?

We have two ways to answer this question: the first is the #historical one, i.e. looking at the past and understanding how many years the previous pandemics caused by respiratory #viruses lasted. (1/9) Image
The available data tell us that all pandemics caused by respiratory #viruses lasted about two years:

-Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu), caused by an #influenza A virus of swine origin, lasted from April 2009 to August 2010.

-Influenza A H3N2 (Hong Kong flu), (2/9)
caused by an influenza A virus that emerged in 1968 and replaced the previous H2N2 #virus, which lasted until 1970.

Influenza A H2N2 (Asian flu), caused by an #influenza A virus that emerged in 1957 and replaced the previous H1N1 virus, which lasted until 1958. (3/9)

Just watched the #CNNTownhall with 2024 Presidential candidate and former President @realDonaldTrump , as well as the post-townhall panel discussion.

One thing is clear: #America is a broken country. It's split right down the middle.

(1/)
Racial divisions and #massshootings are peaking, the economy is cratering, #poverty and #homelessness are rising.

And meanwhile, the US government is involved in, or threatening to get involved in, wars from #Ukraine to #Taiwan to #Syria to #Iran to #NorthKorea.

(2/)
When they should be working on healing the divisions in their own nation. White vs non-White, Rural vs Urban, Rich vs Poor, drug addiction, broken homes - all these are tearing America apart.

I received a gift from #India, a little stone, symbol of teaching. A very precious symbol to me. Now thinking about the new Team #Europe diplomacy on raw material. #Thread
#EU is trying is enhance its diplomacy by diversifying imports and increasing its own capacities through a better coordinated approach. We have now new legislation. The act foresees the creation of a board that would provide a #European perspective on #raw materials. 1/1
You might wonder: "Why start mines in #Europe, when the whole supply chain process works so well and cost-efficiently in #China?" 1/2

#History: "... A combination of rationality, a superior culture and richer public sensibility provided the soil in which #democracy, uniquely, could flourish. But what if that is #nonsense? What if we have the story all wrong?"

We as inhabitants of the subcontinent have same pinch in this regard. Justices of #SupremeCourtofPakistan are megalomaniac thereby abuse their authority. They have their own interpretation of constitution and law. 1/2
Our #democracies are at stack because of #Jurocracy.
From Basic Structure to Doctrine of Necessity, we are colorfully same. 2/2

Next weekend, #G7 leaders will meet for their summit at Schloss Elmau. @SophEisentraut & I have written a new @MunSecConf Brief - including a special edition of the Munich Security Index, based on a representative survey in 🇨🇦🇫🇷🇩🇪🇮🇹🇯🇵🇬🇧🇺🇸 and powered by @KekstCNC. (📸: @_LSimon)
#Zeitenwende is not just a German phenomenon. Except for Canada, people in all G7 countries agree that the invasion of #Ukraine is a turning point for their country's foreign and security policy.
Russia is now seen as the top risk in all G7 countries, apart from Italy. Changes since November 2021 are significant. But while traditional security risks have "returned," non-traditional risks that have dominated the index have not lost their relevance.

If you followed #FreedomConvoy, even supported it, did you really understand danger it poses to Canada? Maybe you waved away extremist elements, saying just a few "bad apples". You'd be deluding yourself. It's time to scratch below the surface, start here:
thewalrus.ca/ottawa-convoy/
Those various flags seen throughout the protest. They weren't one-offs or bad apples, they were embedded in the protest from the start. You saw them:
#Trump flags, Confederate flags, 3% flags, &, yes, Swastika flags (if you have one Nazi in a crowd, you've got a crowd of Nazis).
Think this is an exaggeration? Maybe start to examine what's actually driving these groups. Organizers of #TruckConvoy have a history of extremist views, from #Wexit to disgusting racist bigotry and hatred. It wasn't hidden, you just ignored it.

I feel deeply humbled by the opportunity that I could participate and talk at this weekend's #FutureofDemocracy Forum, the official side event of the #SummitforDemocracy organized by the @LithuaniaMFA in Vilnius.
A rather long THREAD 1-10.

My main message was that a #DemocracyAgenda focusing mostly on the malicious external interference of #authoritarian great powers and #AuthoritarianEncroachment can be easily doomed to fail for a simple reason.

External #ForeignMeddling is only in a small-part responsible for #autocratization and #illiberal developments in the Western World. The main drivers of autocratization in #EU & #NATO countries are overwhelmingly domestic.

A fascinating conversation between Jan-Werner Müller
@Princeton and Rahel Jaeggi @HumboldtUni on what is needed to (re)democratise our #democracies.
These are my key insights on what can be deduced from this for a strong progressive strategy 👇🏽
1/6
As progressives, we have to be careful to use the concept of democratic #regression to describe the status quo of democracies. Rather than a regression, we currently witness an inability of democratic institutions to respond to systemic crises such as the climate crisis.
2/6
There are two central aspects that constitute this crisis: On the one hand, key social institutions such as central banks, financial markets or schools lack democratic ordering principles and with that democratic legitimacy.

For all the apparent bonhomie during the #ModiInAmerica visit the following stand out. 1) As critics gleefully pointed out #kamlaHarris tweeted the visit very late 2) #Modi did not wear a suit even once & only Indian ethnic dress 3) #NarendraModi refused to speak in English even
in the meeting with #JoeBiden using a interpreter 4) A hug was rejected & limited to holding hands 5) #Hindi, #Sanskrit, #IndianCulture, #INDIA INDIA INDIA at every stage with a determined espousal as the Mother of all #democracies, #Vaccine, #Chanakya, #DeenDayalUpadhyaya he
snubbed those who lectured with a slap 6) #NarendraModi bluntly told failures of world orgs without taking names about origin of vaccine & #Afghanistan 7) The most self confident assertion was when he said "When India grows, the world grows, When India reforms world transforms"

Perceptions of #inequality: 🇲🇽🇧🇷🇺🇸🇿🇦

A report from @AFD_France lays out one of the biggest problems for people interested in reducing #inequalities: Inaccurate public #perception of the problem.
(1/x)

afd.fr/en/inaccurate-… Image
“The research finds that individuals have a relatively accurate perception of #poverty, but they substantially overestimate the prevalence of #affluence."

This research shows that people struggle to understand the extent and the depth of the #economic gulfs between us.
(2/x) Image
The fantasy that people can bootstrap their circumstances and achieve some sort of affluent Dream - as has been shown repeatedly - is a myth reinforced by selective, highly publicized examples.

So what’s in for #SocialSciences and #Humanities?
In fact, #SocialSciences & #Humanities are prominently featured in the regulation, which will be the political and legal foundation of #HorizonEU

Art 4 of #HorizonEU regulation on the general structure states:

"#SocialSciences and #Humanities (#SSH) shall play an important role across all clusters”

There will be Clusters on Health, Society, Security, Digital, Climate/Energy/Mobility & Food/Agri/Env

#SciMe = Scientific method ("When the facts change, I change my mind - what do you do, sir?" John Maynard Keynes) First the facts/data, 2nd the Analysis, 3rd the policy implications, finally the views.
2/int Precision in the use of words is very important for understanding & debating different views. Verbal extremism has been liberally used in recent years, generating a cycle of increasing abuse, leading too often to mutual hatred. The intellectuals must set a better example.
3/int A shift in focus from asserting one's views are only correct ones, to debating policy actions can introduce a large dose of reality into the discussions and cool extremist passions. Past is past, what policy action can we take, to make -ve (+ve) outcomes less(more) likely?

#ConcertOfDemocracies 👍🏼: By definition a genuine "Coalition of Democracies" must give weight to one human one vote principle. A coalition led by USA (300-350 people) is a contradiction in terms. A true #Concert of #Democracies must be jointly led by a #Trioka(#USA, #EU, #India)
2/cod Why troika? India's economic power is a fraction of that of the USA and EU, but it's population is 4x. A troika leadership is good compromise between the reality of economic power and the principle of democracy, that must apply to any #concert of #democracies for crediblity
3/cw But the same logic suggests that any organized & economic-technology grouping (w/o "democracy" as a principle) would be led by US-EU and any organized & effective military-strategic grouping wld b led by USA, whose military power is equal to that of all democracies combined

People keep on asking me why I care about what's happening in #HongKong, and why at @NOW4humanity we are organizing #FridaysForFreedom across the world: "it's sad but inevitable and 'only' concerns a couple million people".

Here are some quick thoughts:
2/10

1. Nothing is inevitable. Hong Kong vs #China might be the combat of David vs Goliath, but the world can come to David's rescue

2. Injustice anywhere is a treat to justice everywhere. I would argue that a couple million people is an enormous amount of injustice!
3/10

3. What's happening in #HK is part of a wider pattern of a systematic crackdown on any form of dissent by #China. It has happened in #Tibet. It's happening with the #Uighurs. Now it's #HongKong's turn, but who's next? #Taiwan? Other countries?

There is a saying in Bengali which means the house owner starts taking precautions once the robbery is over. For last three weeks @RahulGandhi became a poster boy of #Pakistan by his immature acts on #Kashmir issue. The realization now dawns that he must change track. 1/n
It is not known what prompted #RahulGandhi 2 try visiting #Kashmir last week, knowing fully well that the #Modi government got moral/legal sanction from the Supreme Court 2 take all preventive measures 2 stop blood spill and, that Gandhi would be returned like other leaders. 2/n
One may see the shadow of #Wayanad in #RahulGandhi's desperation but, to me his acts only helped the politically irrelevant #Left to stay in news. Left has a history of opposing Congress in States while joining hands hands in d Centre. #Congress's gains were short term. 3/n

A quick thread on #Brexit, why the UK is not going to go back to normal politics after Brexit, why the worst is yet to come, and the folly of policy-driven (libertarian or socialist #Lexit) Brexits.
To many, Brexit is abt “Taking Back Control,” a legitimate perspective in times of increasing interdependence and growth of int'l institutions. However, the undertone is often that control has been relinquished *without good reason.*
Here’s the political science perspective: The flipside of democratic control, #responsiveness, can be policy instability. If majoritarian decisions can always b overturned, some policies r dysfunctional bc actors won't investments (financial or social) necessary to make it work.
