Excited to be sharing lessons learned from #American #wildfires and #disasters @imperialcollege.

Our friends in #Britain face some of the same #resilience challenges with #fire, #infrastructure, & #publichealth.

CAGB building, room 765
11.00 GMT

@NSF @WaterResearch @EPA
Thanks to Prof. @GuillermoRein @ImperialHazelab and everyone for organizing and participating in the seminar. I truly learned a lot. Some really brilliant and insightful researchers here in working on global building #fire and #wildfire challenges.
I even got to see aluminum composite burn, a material examined after the #GrenfellTowerFire.

I also learned about smoldering.

Mangroves are natures own disaster manager. Just 13 seconds to understand how it protects us from Tsunami, Cyclones & storms. Today is #MangrovesDay.
Above video is by courtesy of Dutch research institute Deltares. But how Mangroves protect us from these disasters. Here is a thread.

Mangrove forest after a cyclone. The line of defense after a cyclone.
#Mangrove; not only home for various species but also buffer against #Disaster. Tropical country like India, with densely populated 7500 km long coastline, will be effected by cyclones more due to #ClimateChange. Salt tolerant species acts as a shield. Reposting my old tweets.

Galveston: In 1900, Galveston, population 36,000, was obliterated, making it the site of the worst natural disaster in US history, a sad record it retains to this day. 6,000 to 12,000 were killed, thousands of buildings wiped out, etc. 1/
2/ Galveston was rebuilt with a massive seawall and the land was raised as much as 17 feet. 15 years later, another similar hurricane and storm surge hit. The wall worked. Only 53 were killed. #Galveston #Texas #hurricane #UShistory
3/ 1900 #Galveston hurricane: Galveston was one of Texas' largest cities and was very, very wealthy. Disregarding #statistics #probabilities #science #data, plans for a seawall to protect the sandbar city were dismissed as ridiculous. #nature

9. Hello again, @akgungor_c continues from where he has left :) So, I tend to think of #disasters as systemic “radiographs”. I’m not sure when I first came up with this analogy but I usually associate this idea with my own experience as a search & rescue volunteer.
10. After all, looking around in a disaster-stricken zone, few people don't come to reflect on their own #vulnerability first, then, gradually, about the vulnerability of human societies to massive #disruptions.
11. The greater the impact, the thinner seems the protective bubble provided by our physical and social systems.

Postdisaster msg from HRH Princess Latufuipeka (daughter of King Tupou VI & #Tonga’s High Comm to 🇦🇺). Focus on gratitude, faith &taking refuge in God. This type of reaction overwhelmingly present on Tongan social media atm. Not what you’d usually get elsewhere, but consider (1/4)
#Tonga is one of the most vulnerable countries in the entire world to natural #disasters & climate change. In less than 4yrs it has weathered 2 max strength (Category 5) cyclones, a pandemic and a 1 in 1000yr volcanic eruption + resultant earthquake & #tsunami. (2/4)
And each time, people pick up & carry on. Often with humour & while singing a hymn! I’m no expert but I would think being grateful/positive, having a form of faith & relying on each other as a community helps ease the otherwise depressing mental effects of so much trauma. (3/4)

Today is #WorldMangrovesDay. So let me remind you. #Mangroves;

- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.
They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

I’m sick/tired of politicians claiming that they will build back better, having stolen the idea from the UN disasters strategy: “Building Back Better (BBB) is a strategy aimed at reducing the risk to the people of nations and communities in the wake of future disasters and shocks Image
...The BBB approach integrates #disaster risk reduction measures into the restoration of physical infrastructure, social systems and shelter, and the revitalization of livelihoods, economies and the environment.” There is little detail in UK/US politicians co-opting of the phrase
It has become a meaningless mantra. There is no focus on communities, because they don’t try and understand what a ‘community’ is or learn about its social networks, ties and culture. This is what underpins social systems as defined in the Sendai Framework for Action on #DRR.

50 years ago today was the Bhola cyclone, one of the deadliest tropical storms in world history. It killed up to half a million people in what was then East #Pakistan, and triggered the #Bangladesh liberation war
The Pakistani authorities were negligent & frankly unconcerned about the devastation in their eastern wing. (A bit like President Trump's response to #hurricane Maria in #PuertoRico). Weeks later they held the first democratic election in #Pakistan's history
East Bengali nationalists Awami League @albd1971 campaigned against the failures of the Pakistani state & won one of the most stunning democratic victories ever.

Interesting exchange today with a trey of #HateAmerica folks.

Premise: America doesn't hold a "#moralhighground" and hasn't for generations.
My response: #GTFO. Marshal Plan, rebuilding of Japan, tsunami, earthquake, and hurricane relief around the globe, and a thousand similar expenditures of our blood, sweat, and treasure, say otherwise.

Because you might find it hard to believe, I'm including screengrabs:
Of course, the opening gambit is based on the view of so many #Leftists and #NeverTrumpers that @realDonaldTrump is spoiling America's moral stance in the world.

#JustGOPThings is a new hashtag detailing the atrocities the GOP has been spewing out under the Trump regime.

I've been collecting articles to this end for over two years. Let's take a look at some of those.
I label this thread #Disasters.

It started out detailing how Trump has withheld vital recovery funding from states hit by natural disasters, both red and blue, and has grown to encompass all manner of climate change and pollution chicanery. #JustGOPThings

@EricHolder has asked an important question:

#When was #America #ever #great?

I realize that there is a nearly unavoidable tendency to snort and spew one's coffee when they hear or read his question for the first time. But, honestly, isn't it worth the exercise to answer it?
So, @EricHolder, I'm going to do just that, and I'm going to ask my ragtag bag of followers and detractors to contribute as well.

I'm going to offer my evidence of moments of American greatness. And I'm going to ask those that read this thread to do the same.
But wait!

There's more!

I'm going to ask my detractors and antagonists (are you seeing this @fedupaton) to contribute as well, and will welcome from them both moments of greatness and moments of shame.
