Current research on microplastics is the stuff of nightmares-

They’re dangerous, they’re spread through our food, they're in the air... they’re everywhere

Thread 1/x
#health #ClimateCrisis #PlasticPollution #food
Much of the research is trapped behind paywalls, and only reported on in a limited, fragmented pattern

-like so much else when large corporations cause environmental damage and impose widespread health impacts on the public

#health #ClimateCrisis #PlasticPollution #food
The growing risks of microplastics are a direct function of an ongoing push by the same sociopathic corporations that are driving the climate crisis

These are our 5 takeaways from the #IPCC report on #mitigation, looking at what it means for the #waste sector. Spoiler: we need to cut emissions as fast and furious as we can, and reducing #waste, #plastic and being more materials efficient can help lots
no-burn.org/ipcc-takeaways…
As the report points out, the #waste sector remains the largest contributor to urban emissions after the energy sector, even in low-carbon #cities. Urban areas themselves represent the lion’s share of global emissions, and it's increasing: from 60% in 2000 to 67% in 2015.
So, the @IPCC_CH #ClimateReport recognises that cities can significantly reduce emissions, but this requires systemic transformation: #circulareconomy, #inclusion, #equity, innovative technologies can make a huge contribution towards low carbon urban devel'mnt

Even with proximity principles in place, waste get side to the populations with the lowest incomes and from whose the biggest efforts are required - food for thought from our speaker @MaxLiboiron.

The #GlobalMethanePledge is being launched now at COP26. Result of a massive diplomatic effort by the #EU and the #US, the pledge has now joined over 80 signatories, covering over 2/3 of the global GDP and about 46% of the global #methane emissions. 1/8 unfccc-cop26.streamworld.de/webcast/high-l…
The signatories pledge to cut 30% of global CH4 emissions by 2030, targeting all major emitting sectors #agriculture, #waste, #energy. This is a major step forward & the first time CH4 made it to the top of Global Leaders' priorities list. Many more steps needed looking ahead 2/8
The pledge covers emissions that can be reduced via targeted measures - a lot, but not enough to keep CH4 emissions aligned with 1.5C goal. another 10-15% of reductions must take place via indirect measures incl. #energyefficiency and changes in energy consumption patterns 3/8

It's rare that an academic paper, particularly in STEM, contains florid and philosophical language. The way this author discusses the history of waste though is beautiful. A thread: #academicwriting #stem #waste #history #AcademicChatter #writing pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20817263/
"It is incredible how much history is found at the end of a sewage
system"
"There is no more reliable source of customs and behaviour of a society than its waste products and this fact is beyond the perception of the civilization. A sociological analysis that is more truthful than the analysis of a wastewater does not exist."

Plastics which end up in the sea 🌊are a wasted resource. By encouraging reuse, and improving recycling of plastic as part of a strong circular economy, we make better use of this valuable material🗑️🌍

Plastics in the sea damage our marine environment 🐟🐟🐟, which brings us a range of social and economic benefits, and on which we rely for temperature regulation and carbon storage, as well as food.

A litter sink is an area where marine litter accumulates due to a combination of wind direction, tidal motion 🌊🌊and the spin of the earth🌍. The litter comes from a range of sources and impacts on local communities who find themselves clearing up other people’s rubbish!🗑️🚮 Photo of rubbish on beach
