let's talk about #investment.

#capitalism and capitalists' fortunes are built on this practice. all the free-flowing #business and #finance propaganda, churned out in huge volumes for the edification of persons who've devoted themselves to #money, talks about _investing_.

(1/x)
the great bulk of money made in #capitalism goes only to the ownership class; the toilers below them get pennies. those unable to toil get *less* than nothing—capitalism wants such people to be liquidated, hence @charlesmurray and @EPoe187 cook up rationales for doing so.

(2/x)
ultimately this is *why* #eugenics and "scientific racism" exists at all: #capitalism needs some pseudointellectual justification for marginalizing and liquidating all human beings who are unable or *unwilling* to toil for capitalism. this is WHY @Quillette is well-funded.

Harsh reality: It will take you 10 years to realize how great our college curriculum is and how critical the core Computer Science subjects are.

Do not get misguided by these "EdTech cum SalesTech" startups and influencers. Everything at scale just boils down to

The CSRB conducted an exhaustive review of the events surrounding the December 2021 disclosure of a vulnerability in #Log4j, which led to one of the most intensive cybersecurity responses in history. Highlights from the report 🧵 1/
#Log4j is one of the most serious software vulnerabilities ever. It’s an endemic vulnerability and unpatched versions will remain in systems for years to come, perhaps a decade or longer. The #Log4j event is not over. Risk remains and network defenders must stay vigilant. 2/
Many companies could not quickly identify where in their environments they had vulnerable code, revealing opportunities to increase software transparency and capacity to respond quickly to newly-discovered vulnerabilities. 3/

TIL that the Roman Numerals have only 7 unique symbols. I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500 and M for 1000.

1/n
This might not be interesting but the fact that there is a rule to use these symbols to create the roman numeral representation of any number is indeed very interesting.

❓ Do you know what comparison-based sorting algorithms are?

Did you know that sorting algorithms that are *not* comparison-based can run faster?

A short thread 🧵 ... 1/3

#ComputerScience #100DaysOfCode
Comparison-based algorithms:

🔹 Repeatedly ask "is this element smaller/bigger than this other element?". A function that acts as a black box answers these questions.

🔹 Are general-purpose. No assumptions are made about the input data.

Examples: Quicksort and Mergesort. 2/3
Non-comparison-based algorithms:

🔹 Make strong assumptions about the input data (for example, all elements are small integers).

🔹 Can elude the O(n log n) lower bound of comparison-based algorithms and run in O(n) time.

Examples: Counting sort and Radix sort. 3/3

I am really thrilled to release #AutoSpill onto @biorxivpreprint. It is a novel method for applying compensation to #flowcytometry data, which reduces the error by ~100,000-fold. It is thanks to AutoSpill that we can push machines to their max colours

biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
#AutoSpill is a beautiful example of what #maths can add to #immunology, led by the talented Dr Carlos Roca.

It has really open up my eyes to the potential of #computationalbiology, and is the reason why we have a new #datascience position available:

babrahaminstitute.livevacancies.co.uk/#/job/details/…
So how does #AutoSpill work? If you just want to compensate your data, simply upload your single colour controls to autospill.vib.be and then copy the spillover matrix to your #flowcytometry program of choice

@CarlyEWhyte can walk you through the whole process in <2'

Emotion aware technology
Facial recognition is capable of much more than merely identifying the subject of a photo or video
In fact, recognizing an individual is just the beginning of what is possible...
Emotion aware technology allows the viewer to get a glimpse inside the heart and mind of the subject by analyzing subtle facial movements in real time
How might this new technology be used by consumers, private corporations, and the government in the future?
