En primer lugar, hay que aclarar que estos elefantes del desierto son tan "Loxodonta africana" como los del Serengeti o Kruger. No se trata de especies ni subespecies aparte. Es decir, son poblaciones de elefante africano de sabana, que se han adaptado a aquellos andurriales.
La primera población se encuentra en el norte de #Namibia 🇳🇦en la desértica región de Kunene, caracterizada por tener incluso desiertos de arena. Si a comienzos del siglo XX eran unos 3.000, hoy día son unos 600, que han ido aumentando y expandiéndose en los últimos años.
