There's a lot of justified concern over whether #fermentation capacity can ever meet the promises of biotech at #scale. It's a real challenge, and one likely to present massive roadblocks to promising new companies, even with immediate action. 🧵

So much of #biotech is about proving that a microbe or genetic alteration can achieve X result in the lab, followed by the promise of what's possible "if you just scale this up…". Naturally, that last bit is where the true value proposition (and difficulty) lies.

Making lots of stuff, even with microscopic agents like yeast, requires gigantic steel tanks, and lots of them. For anything that offers global-scale solutions, we're talking many times more capacity than currently exists. But who's going to own and run all the tanks?

Panelists expanded upon some of the report's key themes, including:

But we also heard a lot about #DigitalPublicGoods (#DPGs). Like... A LOT a lot.

So, what's the connection between #DPGs and a just, #inclusive #DigitalTransformation? Why have so many #donors, national #governments, and #tech experts alike expressed interest in #DPG solutions?

Well, they all agree that #DigitalTransformation is at a tipping point globally, with the divisions between wealthy and developing nations especially stark: 96% of the world's unconnected people live in developing countries.

Participated in an industry call this Am. It is obvious now that all municipalities will need to outsource waste collection to the big guys $GFL. Labor inflation hurting. Taxpayers will notice that municipalities operating own fleet are hemorrhaging cash. More wins coming $GFL.

In the US. ~20% of the industry is still Municipal. Should go to nearly 0% over time. Opportunity for solid waste winners with #scale

US + Canada is a $15 billion opportunity for scaled waste companies to replace municipal fleets. I expect $GFL to win more deals in the North East. $WCN to win the West. These deals are very high margin.

If you’re hiring for more than 5 people, I’d personally hire a CTO, CPO or find a co-founder with prior experience in building teams first, and then work with a recruitment agency.

Because hiring or filling headcounts is not the end goal, you’ll need to make sure the new people are onboarded properly, and they have a roadmap to work on.
