🧵 Living and exercising with #DID #ukrunchat
3 weeks ago we pushed the pace whilst out running. Hadn’t done any speed work or hills etc for months as was too worried about my injury prone body. Had several months of steady miles & strength training under my belt & felt ready.
My head was beyond full from everything we are managing - marriage breakdown, prospect of moving home, menopause and of course living with #DissociativeIdentityDisorder - The symptoms for which are just so vast and debilitating that we are too exhausted to try and explain.
TW❗️
That Saturday morning we NEEDED to run hard. Had our mind set on max perceived effort, an out and back of 20 mins each way & ran alongside an experienced and fast runner. So this is where the ability to dissociate becomes dangerous and some might say was an act of #SelfHarm

We get told many ignorant, cruel stories about #SelfInjury & why we do it.

I feel like doing a myth-busting thread, with some of the real reasons from my own life.

Understanding *why* is important.

It can give us power to make the choices that are right for us.

1/

#selfharm The word ‘me’ is painted on...
Transforming pain

It’s hard to feel two kinds of different pain at once.

So sometimes, if my emotional pain feels unbearable, I create physical pain—like a kind of alchemy. It still hurts but it’s often more bearable.

This kind of SI can help keep me alive.

2/
Shame & punishment

The worst ongoing impact of child abuse for me is shame. It’s insidious. Sometimes my SI is a response to that, a way of trying to feel like a good person.

This is often hidden, very private SI. Sometimes it makes shame worse, sometimes it helps.

#Suicide by Clinic-Referred #Transgender #Adolescents in the United Kingdom. Great piece here urging us to reflect upon & think about, if evidence based #science is still your thing. Biggs (2022) conclusion asks us to question #medical responsibility. researchgate.net/publication/35…
How do we know if we are acting responsibly when we are offering ‘information’? What information are we offering? What if that information is on risk for #selfharm & #suicide? As a part of our daily #dutyofcare part of the #safeguarding process?
What about if that information is relied upon when we obtain parental consent for intervention with #children & #adolescents? What if that information isn’t true, is inaccurate, exaggerated, inflated, distorted? #science

#LifeOffOfThePsychWard
As mentioned earlier, this a 10 point thread about #SelfHarm and #Suicide.

It comes with a #TriggerWarning.

I will be using my own experience to TRY and educate and encourage reflection, particularly in those who work in #mentalhealth or encounter
1/14
individuals who may self harm.

Those with lived experience may find it unhelpful and may want to not to read it.

So here goes...

1) Self harm can take many forms; and one person can use multiple across their life span. I have engaged in at least 7 different behaviours
2/14
from my teenage years up until now.

2) Just as the method can change so can the function. 15/16 year old me self harmed for punishment - the belief that I had been the reason for my parents separation. I have self harmed in order to feel in control; to release a build up

Today is 100 days since I was first admitted to hospital after taking a mixed overdose. I won't elaborate further.
Since then I have had 3 admissions; 2 to general wards and 1 to a #mentalhealth unit. I spent time as an informal patient and also detained under Section 3 1/21
I was under #Crisis services until last week...
Today is also the first night in 99 that I am spending alone, so to occupy myself and acknowledge the 'milestone', I thought I would reflect on 10 things that I have learnt in that time...
This comes with trigger warnings 2/21
As I will be speaking about #SelfHarm and #Suicide. I also apologise in advance for any poor grammer - I am typing this out on my phone, unable to use a key board.
These are just my own experiences/thoughts/opinions - they are not meant to be generalised. Nor are they based 3/21

Reports from all around the world including from those of @WHO say that Corona virus is here to stay. The future seems like a dystopian one, and a lot of people are going through personal experiences and emotions that they have never felt before.
The @UN has already laid out their policy about #Covid-19 and the need for action on #mentalhealth. It is serious. We must recognize the importance of a healthy mind. People from all walks of life including small children are concerned and afraid of what the future holds for them
These are the times when we need to reassure ourselves, or someone who can re-ignite in us the confidence in our capability to survive even in the harshest times. This is a window for inspirational figures and government authorities in India to start a movement about the

A cut not too deep

It's sad and lonely
Never felt this numb
With so much pain and emotions unexpressed
Just like the artist expresses better on the canvas but this time my torso and limb is my canvas

With the razor on my wrist
I cut a little deep, not too deep
I feel so much pleasure in those cuts
Even if I push further I would still not mind

Springs of red fountain flows endless
Dripping with every cut
That's my only way of hiding from my
From my fears and demons
It seem overwhelming but with another not too deep a cut I can feel safe again
Atlas this time the cut had severe a vein and the not too deep a cut becomes a pool that I am soaked in.

It appears that the makers of Replika #AI have been making changes so that the chatbot can spot when a user is talking about #selfharm or #suicide - it's not 100% successful in this test but much better than in my earlier testing
Apparently, this #AI friend thinks that my consumption of 2,000 bottles of beer today is healthy 🍺
