What you will not learn at the best business school or university is how to manage people!
Personnel management or people management skills can only be learned at the practical work desk.
That is what will make all the difference btw failure and success.
Good luck with your MBA!
I have seen brilliant Students with a GPA of 3.9/4 failing in the real world.
Degrees, Exams, Diplomas, and Certificates don't make much out of anyone.
They are bureaucratic measures used by policymakers and scholars to delay the supply of labour and as a tool of social closure.
I seriously feel sorry for some of my PhD students.
They are discriminated against by those who have Ivy League & UOL Lead school MBAs.
And when they would like to join academia, they are pushed deeper into the abyss by being forced to do #Postdocs to continue the agony.

This is something I have experienced recently too, having had to advertise the same post-doc position FIVE times, and interview candidates on FOUR separate occasions
Here are my thoughts about this in a brief🧵1/n
I feel a big factor here is that #COVID19 & all the associated problems it caused for lab scientists has laid bare the precarious nature & short-termism of being a #PostDoc to #PhD students coming through the system & many have just decided "this is not for me"
2/n
The number of applicants was way down each time I advertised the #PostDoc position (and no where near the 36 that @Mad_Lancaster received!!)

The impact of the pandemic on postdocs has been tremendous and we show that institutional support plays a massive role in alleviating stressors faced by postdocs. 2/5
We hope this paper provides empirical evidence for how important mental health resources, PDAs and PDOs are for the wellbeing of our postdoctoral population and ensures continued funding and support for these assets. 3/5

Today is my last Friday before I become #faculty 🤯 and I wanted to take a second to reflect a little on my #postdoc experience. Spoiler alert: yes I grew a lot and met amazing people but no, postdocing wasn’t fun and I wouldn’t want to do that again. #PostdocLife 1/n
First the good - I learned and grew a lot during my postdoc and thanks to that, my career has shifted in exciting new directions. It also taught me not to be scared to try something new! Remember: PhD grads are really good at learning new stuff. #PostdocLife 2/n
What I learned cost me a lot though… being a #postdoc is by definition full of uncertainty and pressure: you don’t know where you’ll be living in 1-2yrs, funding insecurity for some, pressure to do great so you can land your next job, etc… #PostdocLife 3/n

1/Always wondered why getting a #PhD was associated with a career in #Academia, especially because most universities offering the degree never train you how to teach! Apparently, the term doctor derives from Latin, meaning "teacher" or "instructor".
2/The doctorate (Latin: doctoratus)appeared in medieval Europe as a license to teach Latin (licentia docendi) at a university. Its roots can be traced to the early church in which the term doctor referred to the Apostles, church fathers, and other Christian authorities who taught
3/The right to grant a licentia docendi (i.e. the doctorate) was originally reserved to the Catholic church, which required the applicant to pass a test take an oath of allegiance, and pay a fee. That is the history.

Lately I have been talking to some students and friends about various places to look for academic positions. Because there is no ONE-FOR-ALL space to find opportunities, here is a thread summarizing the ones I know of 1/34 #AcademicTwitter #phdchat #phd #internationalPhD
Having said that, I must emphasize that this #database is skewed towards #Asians and #Indians (and other #internationals) to study in #EU #UK or #USA in general and is certainly not exhaustive. I have no info. on #NSF grants for example or grants within India. 2/34
Most importantly, I’m hoping this thread helps #colouredwomeninSTEM & #WomeninSTEM, please feel free to RT. And as a #biologist, I am more aware of databases in #ecology, #wildlife, #evolution and #conservation circles, feel free to add more and share. Let’s dive right in! 3/34

Thread: grant submission experiences as a #PI vs. trainee…with sides of serious and comical.

#AcademicTwitter @AcademicChatter
This week I worked alongside some of my #EPCHL team members (#postdocs, #PhD students) and colleagues to submit 2 applications (was involved in a 3rd). Same competition, same deadline.
Other #EPCHL staff continued to keep our 7+ other clinical trials running smoothly; they have this, they have superpowers that we don’t praise enough.

This brought up memories of a grant submission during graduate school where the PIs and PhD students.

Grad students! I want to give you a couple words of advice about finding postdoc positions. (Having just advertised a postdoc position, I am noticing some patterns, and perhaps not everybody is getting the mentoring they need when it comes to finding a postdoc position). Thread..
1) If you are interested in working at a particular lab, you do not need to wait that lab to advertise a postdoc position. Get in touch with the PI, tell them why you are interested, and ask if there are any opportunities at their lab. If they like you, they are likely able to...
...find a way to hire you. Maybe they have some extra funds to support you until you get your own fellowships. Maybe they are willing to help you apply for fellowships. So don't just wait for jobs to be advertised. Be proactive.

when it comes to engaging #STEM #academics (an essential task in order to gain max momentum to tackle problems like #casualisation), i think 1 difficulty is that #activism uses a lot of logical fallacies. this makes taking action appear irrational 1/15

#AcademicChatter #ucu
examples:
people going on #strike = potential bandwagon fallacy

stories of injustice = anecdote, appeal to emotion

statistics = potentially cherry picked

calling out management = potential ad hominem

quoting/critiquing management = potential strawman
2/15
identifying an issue (e.g. casualisation) and claiming it impacts other issues (e.g. mental health problems) = potential false cause, and/or hasty generalisation fallacy

making broad statements (e.g. gender pay gap is a real problem) = ambiguity fallacy

Read about our @NatureEcoEvo comment on how to prepare a growing #postdoc workforce in the @nationalpostdoc #POSTDOCket! The nb of postdocs has doubled in 30 years, but faculty positions nearly not changed. We propose 5 key points to better prepare us for a wide range of careers:
1.Align career development with job markets: a survey found that #STEM PhDs lack skills essential for the current #career landscape. #Postdocs need to be encouraged by advisors & departments to invest time in professional development.
#phdchat #beyondprof

journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
2. Sustain wellness & work-life balance: a happy worker is a productive worker! No #postdoc should lack access to healthcare, sick leave or parental leave, we need more transparency about benefits & recognition of #mentalhealth consequences of short term contracts & relocation.

These are trying times. Take care of yourself, your family, and your community. Give yourself grace over the next few days/weeks/months.

I’ve thought a lot about what I can do as an administrator to support #postdocs who are going through an incredibly challenging time.

As I’ve been working in the #online prof. development space, the least I can do is share some #resources if you want to take your mind off the craziness of our world right now.

Here we go 👇

(1/n) Delighted to share our work using #scRNAseq to explore the intersection between regeneration, development and #immune recognition in #cancer #metastasis online @NatureMedicine @sloan_kettering @WeillCornell @scell_papers @dana_peer @LabMassague
nature.com/articles/s4159…
@NatureMedicine @sloan_kettering @WeillCornell @scell_papers @dana_peer @LabMassague (2/n) human primary #lungcancer is characterized by the emergence of regenerative cell types, typically seen in response to lung injury, but showing striking lineage promiscuity (identity confused!)
@NatureMedicine @sloan_kettering @WeillCornell @scell_papers @dana_peer @LabMassague (3/n) #metastasis exhibits a continuum of more primitive stem to epithelial progenitor states – driven in large part by key embryonic and lung-specifying transcription factors, SOX2 and SOX9.

So I left #postdoc, and I left #adjunct and went into #industry. There are two things I wish I knew when making this transition, and I hope it may help you...
...I didn’t know what buzzwords to put on my resume to make it reflect, in #industry terms, my skills. For #STEM academics, I’ve learned that a lot of what we do includes systems engineering, and project management...
...now this may be obvious to some of you, esp the E part of #stem, but I didn’t know this. I recommend looking up buzzwords for sys eng and project management...
