@MichelTdS and I wrote a #review on the last decade of #brain #connectivity #research for a special issue in @ScienceMagazine : 'circuits create networks by stringing together many brain regions to orchestrate brain symphony conducted by finely attuned connections.' A 🧵
First things first, the #cover shows that the corpus callosum has different axonal calibres, as shown in a cross-section of the axons. Warmer colours (red-yellow) indicate thicker axons. These finely attuned connections allow for the perfect orchestration of the brain symphony.
There is a growing consensus: functions are an emerging property of the interaction between brain areas. Function-specific brain activity involves the integrative effort of several brain regions. White matter connections support this integration by interconnecting brain regions

Fourth post in the #WildlifeWeek series. Today’s post is more of a #reviving one than #reintroduction.

Day 4 – Return of the #bandits to #Chambal !

The Red Crowned Roofed #turtle is a #species of #freshwater turtle endemic to South #Asia.
1/9
Historically the species was widespread in the #Ganga River, both in #India and #Bangladesh. Extirpated from most of its former range but currently it has dwindled a last surviving population of less than 500 adult individuals in the #wild.
2/9
Their population reduced drastically due to depredation of eggs and hatchlings by Golden #jackals, #habitat degradation due to #pollution and illegal sand mining in the floodplains. They are also extensively #poached for their meat and shell.

Our new paper @PNASNews is addressing a long-standing question in #ecology, #biodiversity sciences and #conservation biology:
How do multiple #species #coexist in fragmented landscapes?

A 🧵on multispecies coexistence: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… (1/7) Image
2/7 Spatially #fragmented #landscapes are very common, both naturally & through human activities.

In such landscapes, a combination of local survival and #colonization of empty habitat patches is key to species' regional persistence. Image
3/7 However, ecological #theory on species coexistence has so far largely focused on local communities.

By integrating #coexistence theory and #metacommunity theory, we propose a mathematical framework to understand multiple species' coexistence in fragmented landscapes. Image

Mangroves are natures own disaster manager. Just 13 seconds to understand how it protects us from Tsunami, Cyclones & storms. Today is #MangrovesDay.
Above video is by courtesy of Dutch research institute Deltares. But how Mangroves protect us from these disasters. Here is a thread.

Mangrove forest after a cyclone. The line of defense after a cyclone.
#Mangrove; not only home for various species but also buffer against #Disaster. Tropical country like India, with densely populated 7500 km long coastline, will be effected by cyclones more due to #ClimateChange. Salt tolerant species acts as a shield. Reposting my old tweets.

1. One of our toughest & longest battles to save #wildlife started on #WorldEnvironmentDay of 2016, when our team mates Suvrajyoti Chatterjee & Meghna Banerjee came to know about the horrific "ritualistic hunting festivals" of South Bengal.
2. We witnessed thousands of slaughtered wild #animals strewn across the railway platforms of Howrah & East Medinipur districts.
We faced both physical as well as verbal abuse from the hunters before we could even grasp the true extent of devastation inflicted by them.
3. Further inquiries revealed it was an annual affair celebrated on the occasion of Faloharini Kali Puja where thousands of armed mobs descend on the #forests & rivers of these two districts & decimate every #wildanimal they can find.

Today is #WorldMangrovesDay. So let me remind you. #Mangroves;

- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.
They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

In #TropicalForests, dung beetles💩 are fundamental for ecosystem functioning, as shown by our research. Want to know why? Check this 🧵. 1/11

🎥: @FilipeEco
The #DungBeetle name refers to the habit that some species of these beetles have in rolling feces from different animals. 2/11

🎥: @Erika_Berenguer
Dung beetles use #poop for feeding and nesting, with their larvae already hatching in a nutrient-rich environment. Some species roll using their front legs, such as this Oxysternon festivum rolling dung from a howler monkey in the Maracá Island, Roraima. 3/11

This is a tremendous step forward: bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…

If it's designed well, this target could power the policy & investment needed to turn round the decline of #nature at last.

Thank you to everyone who has joined the #StateofNature campaign! Keep going until it's in law.
It has been brilliant to see the #environment movement unite for this critical law for wildlife, combining @WCL_News members with great friends like @Team4Nature & @mentalhealth.

Thank you @DefraGovUK for listening to the 60+ charities and 160,000+ people backing #StateofNature.
Now we need to make sure that the details of the target are right: it must cover as many #species as possible, with measures for abundance & diversity of #wildlife. We'll need an action plan for delivery, clear reporting to Parliament and accountability.

TLDR: we projected that ~88% of the 20,000 #species we looked at will lose habitat to farmland by 2050, and ~1300 will lose 25% (a QUARTER!) of their remaining habitat. This is #badnews and could hugely increase #extinction risks. 2/ nature.com/articles/s4189…
BUT with proactive #conservation actions we can eliminate losses! Increasing agricultural yields, shifting to healthier diets, reducing food waste, and global-scale land-use planning can, when combined, provide healthy diets for a growing population AND conserve biodiversity 2/
